Family Violence Intervention Program (FVIP)
"Creating a Process of Change for Persons Who
Batter"
Care Lodge Domestic Violence Shelter, Inc. offers this
comprehensive educational program to provide an opportunity for change to
batterers who have been found guilty of domestic violence in the local court
system. This program is based on the Duluth Model which was created in
1984. It is a national recognized program in stopping abusive behavior. There
has been success in breaking the cycle of violence in communities that have
implemented this curriculum.
This program has five objectives:
To Teach... the
participant to understand that acts of violence are a means of
controlling their partner's actions, thoughts and feelings. (Power
and Control Wheel)
To Increase... the
participant's understanding of the cause of their violence by examining
their belief system and the cultural and social contexts in which they
operate. (Cycle of Violence Wheel)
To Increase... the
participant's willingness to change their actions by examining the negative
effects of their behavior.
To Encourage... the
participant to become accountable to those they have hurt by helping them to
acknowledge their abusive behavior, accept responsibility and take specific
steps to change.
To Provide... the
participant with practical information on how to change abusive behavior by
exploring non-controlling and non-violent ways of relating to their partner.
